“Member Injury Report Procedure”: https://lifesaving.com.au/app/uploads/GOV10-Member-Injury-Reporting.pdf

Member Injuries are to be reported to the State Operations Communication Centre (SOCC) via phone. Once the injury has been reported, the SOCC will create an Incident through LIMSOC which will generate an IRL for completion. Please ensure you have all required information at hand when phoning the SOCC and ensure that all fields are completed as accurately and as detailed as possible in the IRL. The contact number for the SOCC is 07 5631 7400 and they are open 7 days a week from 7am – 5pm.

The claims process to follow when a member is injured during approved Surf Life Saving activities is:

  1. See your doctor as soon as possible and get a Workers Compensation Medical Certificate. Arrange appropriate transportation if needed and go to a public hospital.
  2. Advise your club about your injury.
  3. The club must send the following to SLSQ ASAP:
  • A Workers Capacity medical certificate from your doctor or dentist;
  • Ensure an IRL is completed by the club and submitted online;
  • Patrol log (if applicable);
  • Training log (if applicable);
  • Any other relevant information relating to the injury and or the approved activity you were engaged in at the time.

WorkCover and Surf Life Saving Queensland assess your application according to Workers Compensation Legislation, determining if:

  • You are a current financial member (approved Surf Life Saving activity);
  • You have suffered an ‘injury’;
  • You were engaged in an approved Surf Life Saving activity i.e. documented within club minutes.
    You will receive a letter regarding the outcome of your claim from SLSQ and WorkCover Queensland. If accepted, WorkCover Queensland will pay compensation benefits. WorkCover will manage your claim including any further rehabilitation if needed and advise SLSQ throughout the claim’s duration.

Returning to Active Duties
In order to return to active duty with your club you will need to:

  • Obtain a Work Capacity medical clearance;
  • Obtain a SLSQ return to work surf duties form;
  • Supply Clearances to SLSQ and WorkCover;
  • Await advice from SLSQ on claim closure and removal from restricted duties.

IMPORTANT: Once a member lodges a WorkCover claim the member is placed on leave/restricted duties until the claim is closed and SLSQ has received the compulsory SLSQ return to work medical certificate.

For further information on member injury reporting, check out the SLSQ Administration Operations Manual Section 8.2 ‘Member Injuries’.
