Raising of the Flags Patrol

Each year we ‘Raise the Flags’ on our first volunteer patrol of the season; placing the red and yellow in the sand as an iconic symbol of safety, vigilance and service. The significance of this varies between clubs and members. It involves raising the iconic red and yellow flags, symbolizing supervised swimming areas, alongside the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags. This signifies a commitment to community, safety, and First Nations recognition.

How To Engage

• Register for SLSQ support with resources, talking points and flags online – Raising The Flags
• Hold a simple flag-raising moment at the first patrol of the season
• Include a red and yellow flags alongside the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags where appropriate
• Invite members, council, Government stakeholders/other VIPs and community representatives to attend and acknowledge the season opening
• Share the meaning of the ceremony with members and the public to reinforce safety, service, and recognition
• You can also have a morning tea where appropriate
