Sexual Assault

  • If a student has been sexually assaulted, encourage the student to seek medical attention immediately to ensure they are treated for injuries, STIs, and if needed, emergency contraception/counseling regarding pregnancy. Encourage the student to report the sexual assault to the local police and /or the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
  • Inform R-MC Campus Safety at (804) 752-4710 first who will contact Dean Azdell and the OIE.
  • OIE must report incidents of sexual assault to the Title IX Officer for the College. The OIE will help with reporting options and researching local laws specifically for the country you are in.

Serious Injury/Physical or Mental Illness/Hospitalization

  • Ensure the student is receiving appropriate care.
  • Get all details possible: what is being done to assist the student, where is the student located, who is staying with the student? Get names and contact information for any witnesses or others who may be involved in the accident or injury
  • Inform R-MC Campus Safety at (804) 752-4710 first who will contact the OIE. OIE can provide additional support with regards to insurance coverage as needed.
  • Contact the insurance company’s 24/7 global assistance (refer to Emergency Contact Information while Abroad).
  • Consult with the Center for Counseling Services, as needed.

Missing Participant

If a program participant is missing for a significant period of time:

  • Ask friends and associates about his/her whereabouts.
  • Check social media for indications of student’s whereabouts, or at least his/her last known location.
  • Notify the U.S. embassy/consulate, local police, and host institution and give them your telephone number.
  • Inform R-MC Campus Safety at (804) 752-4710 first who will contact Dean Azdell and the OIE. Provide as many details as possible regarding what happened and what is being done.
  • Check with authorities daily and inform R-MC of any new developments.

Robbery

  • Inform the local law enforcement agency.
  • Assist the student in obtaining funds to replace stolen money and/or passports by contacting their emergency contact. Go to the nearest U.S. consulate/embassy with a photocopy of the original passport information page for replacement.
  • Inform R-MC Campus Safety at (804) 752-4710 first who will contact the OIE.
  • Obtain the police report, if possible.

Student Arrest or Detention

  • Obtain as much information as possible concerning the arrest/detention, including:
    • Name of participants
    • Date, place, and time of arrest/detention
    • Charges
    • Alleged occurrence (summary of incident)
    • Who was involved
    • Location at which the person is being held
    • Normal police/judicial procedure from this point
  • Obtain a copy of police report
  • Inform R-MC Campus Safety at (804) 752-4710 first who will contact Dean Azdell and the OIE.
  • Notify the U.S. embassy/consulate – they will assist in locating legal counsel.
  • Visit the detained/arrested individual and be the source of communication.

Attempted Suicide

  • Ensure the student is receiving the appropriate medical and psychological care.
  • Inform R-MC Campus Safety at (804) 752-4710 first who will contact Dean Azdell and the OIE.
  • Get all details possible: what is being done to assist the student, where is the student located, who is staying with the student?
  • Consult with the Center for Counseling Services

Death

Natural or Political Disaster

  • Evaluate information from the Embassy or Consulate.
  • Consult with OIE via R-MC’s Campus Safety to determine the course of action (shelter in place, evacuate, or delay return) and to access resources.
  • Contact your travel provider for additional information and options.
  • Contact the insurance company’s 24/7 global assistance (refer to Emergency Contact Information while Abroad).
