• When an activity is listed as “optional,” or “free time” is listed on the daily itinerary, students may choose how to spend their time and are not obligated to stay with the group. However, in the event that they choose to leave the group, you as the Instructor must require them to notify you of their planned whereabouts and provide you in writing with their contact information.
  • Instructors must also alert students that they cannot guarantee student safety, especially if/when they are alone and/or if they elect to engage in risky behavior.
  • The Instructor should provide alternate activities during free time, whenever possible. Under no circumstances will free time be extended overnight.
  • During free time, the Instructor/chaperone must be reachable at all times and must check in with their students at the end of each day to ensure their safety.
  • Refer to the sample Off-campus Policies on our BuzzNet site.
