The enrollment numbers will be reviewed by the OIE and Provost’s Office. Courses with fewer than nine (9) individual students (enrolled and fully paid) per faculty member are at risk of cancellation. For example, when two courses are traveling together, the minimum number required for the entire group is eighteen (18) individual students. Any exceptions to these enrollment numbers will require approval by the Provost.

Decisions about cancellation are typically made in July, after returning and new students have completed pre-registration for the Fall and January Terms. For Summer Term study/travel courses, enrollment numbers will be assessed during January.

Proposed courses must obtain the minimum enrollment numbers to ensure, among other issues, that the cost of the trip for the faculty member(s) and approved chaperone(s) will be fully covered by the total student payments that will be collected.

In determining the appropriate maximum course numbers, faculty should also consider practical matters such as transportation and safety. Optimum number of student participants sought for your program to be financially self-sustainable and logistically feasible (considering the infrastructure, safety condition, etc. of your destination(s). Please feel free to contact OIE if you would like to discuss how to determine your maximum number.
