Configuring print devices, such as network printers and MFPs, very much depends on the functionality being used and the preferred deployment option. PriApps has 2 simple definitions of print devices:

  • Managed Printer – a print device whose print queue is being directly managed by PriApps for the purposes of Secure Print Release (pull printing), Single Sign-On (SSO) or accurate print and copy usage tracking. Here PriApps is replacing all the functionality of traditional print servers with the added value of its powerful feature set.
  • Non-Managed Printer – a print device that PriApps is simply tracking print usage, offering rules-based printing features on, providing Cost Recovery & Billing for, or managing printer drivers for the user. Users continue to print to non-managed devices through existing print servers, direct-IP printing or USB printing.

This section describes the configuration of Managed Printers for the purposes of Secure Print Release and Single Sign-On (SSO) features that require PriApps to take over the control of the print device using the manufacturer specific 3rd party application APIs. Some MFP platforms require PriApps software to be loaded onto the print device others do not.

In most cases setting up printers and MFPs in PriApps is completely automatic, although it should be noted that not all MFP platforms allow for such an automated setup. If problems do occur, it is possible to setup MFPs manually by following the specific instructions for each supported MFP platform (provided separately) or by following the manufacturers’ instructions for deploying applications such as PriApps.
