Purpose: To establish a set of rules and procedures that regulate the use of radio communication systems.

Scope: This procedure applies to all Operators transmitting on the radio network.

  1. Overview
    1.1 These protocols ensure efficient and effective communication between lifeguards, volunteers, operation support units and SurfCom.
    1.2 The primary objective of radio communication protocols is to promote clarity, conciseness, and accuracy in transmitting and receiving messages on the Network.
    1.3 By adhering to these established rules and procedures, radio operators can enhance situational awareness, facilitate collaboration, and support effective emergency response efforts.
  1. Key Elements to establish a strong radio protocol:
    2.1 Using clear and concise language to ensure that messages are easily understood and mitigate the risk of miscommunication.
    2.2 Operators must speak clearly, pronounce words accurately and use standardised terminology and call signs where applicable.
    2.3 Ensure the use of correct pro-words and phrases.
    2.4 Use of the phonetic alphabet when practical to ensure accurate transmission and reception of each letter when transmissions may be of poor quality.
    2.5 The use of correct radio etiquette when using radio communications (includes practices such as waiting for a pause before transmitting, speaking clearly and calmly, and avoiding interrupting others)
    2.6 Can prioritise transmissions when they are occurring simultaneously, ensuring that critical information is addressed promptly.
    2.7 Repeat and Confirm information to ensure accuracy and reduce errors.
    2.8 Actively listen and monitor all radio communications to ensure information is not missed and prompt action is taken if required.
