VERSION 1.0 – DECEMBER 2023

Purpose: To provide guidance to operators and visitors on how to maintain a safe working environment at the State Operations Communications Centre (SurfCom).

Scope: This procedure applies to all operators and visitors at the State Operations Communications Centre (SurfCom).

  1. Housekeeping
    1.1 All operators and visitors are responsible for keeping their work area clean and free from clutter.
    1.2 Operators must not store personal items, such as bags, in walkways or doorways.
    1.3 Spills, leaks, and other hazards must be immediately reported to the OCS or Senior Operator for clean-up.
    1.4 Closed in shoes must be always worn in the centre.
  1. Electrical Safety
    2.1 Electrical equipment must be in good condition and must be properly grounded.
    2.2 Operators must not use electrical equipment that is damaged or malfunctioning.
    2.3 Operators must not overload electrical outlets or extension cords.
    2.4 Electrical equipment must be turned off and unplugged before any maintenance or repair work is done.
  1. Fire Safety
    3.1 Operators must know the location and proper use of fire extinguishers and other fire-fighting equipment.
    3.2 Operators must not use equipment that is damaged or malfunctioning.
    3.3 Operators must immediately report any signs of fire or smoke to the OCS or Senior Operator and follow the evacuation procedures.
  1. Ergonomics
    4.1 Operators must use proper ergonomic practices when working at their workstations.
    4.2 Workstations must be designed and arranged to reduce strain and fatigue.
    4.3 Operators must take regular breaks and perform stretching exercises to reduce the risk of injury.
  1. Responsibilities
    5.1 All operators and visitors are responsible for following the procedures outlined in this procedure.
    5.2 The OCS is responsible for ensuring that their operators and visitors are aware of and following the procedures outlined in this procedure.
    5.3 The OCS and Operation Support Supervisor are responsible for ensuring that the necessary resources and equipment are provided to ensure a safe working environment.
