Device App Installer - Observit Enterprise Center

Introduction

Observit has multiple apps that can be installed in devices such as people counters, cameras, and communication routers. Normally, these apps are managed remotely from the cloud using Observit Enterprise Center.
However, when a brand-new device is put in operation, the first app must be installed from the same network as the device. This has three purposes:
• Cloud-enable the device so it connects to Observit Enterprise Center.
• Prove ownership of the device to maintain cyber-security. This prevents unauthorized users from registering devices to Observit Enterprise Center.
• Setting of parameters to establish the organizational home of the device.

Installation Overview

Observit installer is PC software that you run on your computer. You do not have to install the application; it is enough to click on the executable file to start it.
Observit installer finds devices on the local network and pushes Observit apps to the devices.

This user guide describes how the Observit installer PC application is used to install an Observit app in a device.

Terminology

Customer key
A short, alphanumeric key used to uniquely associate a device with a customer. A customer may have several keys, either with limited or permanent validity.

Device
A small, network-connected, special-purpose computer running Linux, e.g., a camera, people counter or router.

Holder
The location or vehicle that contains the device. This could be mobile devices such as buses or trucks, as well as in a fixed location as a depot or freight terminal.

Holder ID
A unique, customer-defined identity of a holder, e.g., number plate or inventory number.

Installation Overview

Installation is done in the place where the devices are located, for example in a vehicle. Observit installer is a PC software that can be runs on any computer. You do not have to install the application; it is enough to click on the executable file to start it. Observit installer finds devices on the local network and pushes Observit apps to the devices.
The installation proccess is consists of multiple steps:
1. Set parameters for installation. These are normally different for each holder, but the same for each device in a holder.
2. Select target devices for installation from a list of devices found on the network.
3. Select the wanted installation package for each device.
4. Confirm selection and start installation.
5. Verify that the installation was successful.

If you make a typo and install an app with the wrong parameters, there is a function to correct the configuration afterwards.

Start Details

Start Observit installer by clicking on the program name.
A screen is displayed while the program starts, showing the version of the installer.

Main, Set parameters for installation
Fill in this form and click OK.

Fields with valid content shows a green border and fields with incomplete or invalid content have a red border.
The Light mode / Dark mode switch changes the color settings for the application and can be toggled at any time.

Customer Key is mandatory.
Sent to Observit Enterprise Center, to let OEC know which customer owns the device.

Holder ID is mandatory.
Sent to Observit Enterprise Center, so that the server knows where the device is installed.

Password is mandatory.
It tells Observit installer the password of the device. Normally, if the device is new and unused, the password is the default.

Select network mode is mandatory.
It tells Observit installer the networking mode, which can be automatic or manual.

Click on the feature button to continue with installation or configuration update.

Install software on devices
Starts the installation process. For further details please check the “Installation” section.

Update configuration on devices
Allows correction of the configuration file on one or multiple devices if a mistake has been made during install. For further details please check the “Updating configuration” section.

Installation

Automatic network scan
If the selected mode was automatic, the application will look for devices on the network and display the progress. Wait until it finishes the lookup process.

Manual network handling

If the manual network handling was selected, Observit installer will display an address manager. Add the addresses you need by entering each IPv4 address and clicking “Add”. When all addresses are entered, click “Next”.

You must add at least one address. To remove an element from the list, click on the red “Remove from list” button.

Waiting for network
After the IP address management, Observit Installer will look for devices at the manually selected addresses and display the progress. Wait until the addresses are checked.

Select target devices
All found devices are shown in a list.

Select the devices you are interested in and click “Next”.

Select installation package
The selected devices are shown, with the installed applications and a drop-down menu with packages you can install.

If the installer fails to log in to a device using the supplied password, an error message is shown instead of the menu.
Select the wanted package for each device and click “Start install process”.

Confirm selection and start installation
A summary of the selected actions is displayed. Review the changes and click “Confirm” to start installation.

Verify
Check the feedback and verify that installation was successful.

Update Configuration

Configuration update information
Enter credentials for Customer Key and Holder ID and type them again to ensure the data. Then click on “Next”.

You must enter at least one of customer key and holder id.
New Customer Key and Confirm new customer key field content must be equal.
New Holder ID and Confirm New Holder ID field content must be equal.

Automatic network scan
If the selected mode was automatic, the application will look for devices on the network and display the progress. Wait until it finishes the lookup process.
