Install an escape hatch in Transom. The Lewmar Low Profile Size 54 is the preferred hatch for the transom. It is to European Union escape hatch standards… meaning that it is big enough for just about anyone to fit through with clothing on. The escape hatch in the Transom is a direct carryover from the Mini Transat boats and is a detail that sets the boat apart from other small sailboats out there. It is not just there for looks… Skate is a very lightweight boat that is not self-righting. As such, someone can get trapped below decks if the boat completely capsizes. The hatch gives some extra sense of security in knowing you or your crew can get out of the boat in an emergency. With that said, the transom escape hatch is a great asset in a couple of other ways. It lets a lot of light into the cabin— my daughter’s favorite past time while underway was to hang out with a friend and watch the water go by. It is also extremely handy when loading the boat with gear when it is on a trailer or the beach. I find myself loading all the gear through the transom, only climbing inside afterward to arrange the gear neatly.

if you want to install another hatch make sure it is big enough for you to fit through and it is fully waterproof.

ONLY OPEN THE HATCH IN AN EMERGENCY WHILE IN THE WATER! Although the hatch is just above the waterline while at rest, you risk swamping the boat with the smallest of waves.

To install the hatch use stainless steel bolts and nylocks. Make sure to use oversized washers inside to distribute the loads. Use a generous amount of silkaflex 291 to bed the hatch. You want to see a healthy bead of sealent squeeze out once you tighten the nuts. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! Clean up the excess with paper towels and alcohol.
