Fair the Boat Top

Sand the entire outside of the cabin top with 80 grit. Take care not to sand into the laminate. Use epoxy filled with a lightweight filler (or System Three’s QuickFair) to fill any low spots in the exterior surface. Pay special attention to where layers of glass overlap, corners, and edges. Look for voids in the laminate— bubbles under the fiberglass surface. Cut these out with a sharp razor knife or grind them out with a dremel. Fill these spots with thickened epoxy. Go over all the surfaces a second time, sanding, filling, detailing etc. The goal is to get these surfaces clean and fair before applying primer.

Use a dremel with a small grinding ball to excavate the void. You want to remove all the unbound glass and slightly grind into the surrounding laminate. Then fill/ fair with thickened epoxy. You would need to handle this differently though if the void was in a critical component like a mast.

I was in conversation with a Boeing line worker that made composite nosecones. He cautioned against grinding into the glass and suggested drilling some small holes into the void and using a large bore hypodermic needle to fill the voids with epoxy. Is this a good idea?
