Printable: Manual Handling Policy and Precautions Regarding Heavy Loads

Some items delivered to my workplace may be heavy, large, or difficult to grasp. Some fixtures, fittings, machinery, or equipment in my workplace may be heavy, large, or difficult to grasp (in the event that such object in-store may need to be moved). I understand that my employer will never expect me to risk my personal health and safety by handling, lifting, or moving any item which may result in me sustaining an injury. I am aware that carrying any item up or downstairs or a ladder requires extra caution. I understand that assistance may be needed when handling anything that may be heavy or large and will not take unnecessary risks. The precautions I should undertake before lifting are:

• Plan the lift (identify if the load is too heavy for one person)

• Ask for help

• Get a firm footing

• Bend your knees

• Tighten your stomach muscles

• Lift with your legs

• Keep the load close to body

• Keep back upright

Example of how to lift a load of a stock item: Mass 25Kg.

If I have any doubts or questions, I will communicate with my Manager or Supervisor before undertaking any unnecessary risk.
