How Do I Check If a Bank Note is a Counterfeit?
There are many security features incorporated into euro banknotes.
Many of these features can be checked manually using the Feel-Look-Tilt test.
Feel:
• The paper is crisp and firm
• The paper will have raised ink areas on the front of the note.
Look:
Hold the note up to a light and:
• Look for watermarks (see-through areas of the note)
• Check for security thread
Tilt:
• The holographic stripe or patch will change images and colours
• Check for iridescent stripe on reverse side. Does it shine under a bright light and from some viewing angles?
Check the obvious security features before accepting notes, including the watermark, security thread, hologram patch and raised print.
Notify your local Gardai if any incidents arise
The banknote paper is crisp and firm. It feels thicker in some parts.
The main motif reappears in the watermark and the hologram on the €50, €100, €200.
The value of the banknote appears in the watermark, the security thread, the hologram and in the colour-changing number
