Fire Exits
Fire exits are your means escape to outside in the event of a fire. In your store, this could be the main store door, or designated fire exits. The pathway to fire exit must be clear at all the times. Do not leave boxes or other items in the way.

These should show a running man on a green background and indicate the direction of escape.

These doors must be easy to open at all times – If not, inform your manager. Fire doors should never be kept open with a door wedge or be interfered with in any way.

Fire Alarm
The fire alarm will either be a siren, bell. If you ever hear the fire alarm, you must treat it as a real fire and evacuate the store.

Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are only to be used in event that your escape route is blocked by fire. We have the following types of extinguishers in store:
•Water/Foam: furniture, packaging fires
CO2: electrical equipment (coffee machine, crepes, waffle, tills) fires
All fire extinguishers must be on wall brackets and must not be removed. They are not door stops.
Ensure you know where the Fire Extinguishers are located in your store and what types they are.

How to use a fire extinguisher:
1. Fire extinguishers are only to be used in the event that that your escape route is blocked by fire
2. Select the correct extinguisher for the type of fire. See label on extinguisher if you are not sure.
3. Place extinguisher on the floor at a safe distance from the fire.
4. Pull out the pin in the handle.
5. Aim the hose at base of the fire. If using a CO2 extinguisher, remember DO NOT hold the nozzle as this cause freeze burns to your hands.
6. Squeeze handles together and release contents at fire.
7. If the fire gets bigger / doesn’t go out, or the extinguisher stops before you put the fire out and you don’t have another extinguisher, then leave the fire and escape the building.

Fire Assembly Points
A fire assembly point is important, as it is the safe place away from the fire where everyone meets when they have to escape the store. In the event of a fire the Shift Supervisor or Manager are the nominated staff responsible for evacuating the store. They will also check that everyone who was working in the store is at the assembly point. If anyone is not at the Fire Assembly Point, the Fire Brigade staff can be notified so they know if a life rescue is part of their operation.
Ensure you know where the Assembly Point is for your store.
