The following provides an overview of the layout and features offered by the Skeena Maps Portal. Use the navigation tabs on the left hand side or jump to specific topics using the links below:

Getting started with spatial data layers

The Skeena Maps Portal (SMP) houses a collection of spatial layers drawn from a variety of sources including the Province of BC and Government of Canada as well as a number of custom datasets. You can view all the layers housed in the SMP by clicking on the top “Layers” tab or on the “Explore layers >” button on the SMP home page to navigate to the Explore Layers page.

From the Explore Layers page, you can browse all the layers by title and thumbnail or use the search and filter options to find specific datasets.

When you click on the title of a layer, you will be brought to a unique webpage specific to that layer with the following features:

A) Web mapping tool where you can preview the spatial layer and query specific features;
B) Query tool and navigation tools to focus the preview map on an area of interest;
C) Option to quickly create a downloadable pdf map;
D) Legend describing how the layer is shown on the web map;
E) List of maps using the selected layer;
F) Short description of the layer;
G) Descriptions of the layer attributes;
H) View Layer option to view the layer in the Map Tool; and
I) Download Layer option to download the spatial data layer.

Query features in a layer
The Query objects on map tool (1) can be used to access attribute information for specific features. Clicking on this tool and then clicking on a feature of interest will produce a pop-up (2) with attribute information for that feature.

Changing layer styles
For some layers, multiple styles have been created. All available styles will be indicated in the Styles section, on the bottom right of the page. Available styles can be selected in this section and will modify the appearance of the layer.

Additional functionality such as area measurements and filter by attribute are available through the Map Tool.

Getting started with maps

The SMP also houses a collection of maps, which represent a collection of different layers on one map, usually created for a specific theme or purpose. You can view all the maps housed in the SMP by clicking on the top “Maps” tab or on the “Explore maps >” button on the SMP home page to navigate to the Explore Maps page.

From the Explore Maps page, you can browse all the existing maps by title and thumbnail or use the search and filter options to find specific maps.

When you click on the title of a map, you will be brought to a unique webpage specific to that map with the following features:

A) Web mapping tool where you can preview the spatial layer and query specific features;
B) Navigation and zoom in/out tools to focus the preview map on an area of interest;
C) Option to quickly create a downloadable pdf map;
D) Legend and list of layers used by the map;
E) Short description of the map;
F) View Map option to open the map in the Map Tool; and
G) Download Map option to download the map thumbnail as an image.

Similarly to the layer page, features in individual layers on the map can be queried from the web mapping tool by clicking on individual features to bring up the attributes associated with that specific feature. Additional functionality such as area measurements and query by attribute are available through the View Map option. See link for more information on using the mapping tool.
