This course can only be delivered and/or coordinated at a Branch level. Branches are to coordinate their course requests through their respective SLSQ Regional Education staff member.

COURSE SUMMARY
This course is intended to prepare members for an entry-level beach management role within a lifesaving service. The course is aimed at first-time patrol captains and senior lifeguards.

PREREQUISITES
To commence training for the Silver Medallion Patrol Captains (SMPC) course you must meet the following course prerequisites:

  • be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • hold the Bronze Medallion award AND the Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • minimum two years patrolling experience
  • be proficient in ONE of the following:
    • Bronze Medallion
    • First Aid
    • Radio Operator
    • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
      Note: If Bronze is not proficient, must hold proficient Observers Award

COURSE OUTCOMES

  • act as a team leader as required
  • undertake work activities and accept responsibilities
  • set performance requirements and maintain team performance
  • contribute to team outcomes and support team cohesion
  • participate in a work team and communicate with management
  • prepare for beach surveillance and rescue
  • undertake preventive actions
  • complete beach surveillance and rescue recovery requirements
  • respond to casualties in distress

BOOKING A COURSE

  • Courses will require at least 4 weeks lead time to allow candidates to be allocated and complete the pre-course work
  • EDC/ETS will ensure that the course meets the requirements (dates, times , location etc.) and allocate facilitators where required
  • EDC/ETS will provide facilitators with eLearning reports to ensure that the candidates have completed the pre-course work.
    • No pre-course work completion means no attendance

WHO CAN TRAIN and ASSESS?
Facilitator Silver Medallion Patrol Captain

  • Must hold Cert IV TAE 40116 or equivalent
  • Must hold the SMPC facilitator award to deliver the new SMPC course
  • Existing SMBM facilitators will need to complete the new course and be inducted to deliver the new SMPC course
  • Anyone who would like to facilitate this course that hasn’t previously been a SMBM facilitator will need to go through the normal probationary facilitator process
  • It is recommended that 2 facilitators conduct each course
  • Will be responsible for ensuring that they have access to all the necessary equipment as listed in the DAG

ASSESSMENT
Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.

COURSE STRUCTURE
Blended learning approach:

  • Online eLearning – Approx. 6 hours
  • Surf Risk Rating
  • On-the-Job Third-Party Report – Attend a patrol
  • Face to Face Theory – Approx. 6 hours 35 mins
  • Face to Face Assessment – Approx. 5-7 hour

SKILLS MAINTENANCE/PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
There is no annual skills maintenance requirement for this award. The award will remain current provided all the pre-requisites as above remain current.
