Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) is the process used to determine whether a learner has acquired the skills and knowledge required to perform effectively and safely in their role, as outlined in the relevant unit of competency.
CBA involves collecting and evaluating evidence to assess whether an individual can demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to industry standards. To be deemed competent, learners must consistently apply these skills in a range of workplace-relevant scenarios.
Unlike traditional education systems that use letter grades or percentages, VET assessments are outcome-based. Learners are assessed as either *Competent *or *Not Yet Competent *against clearly defined performance criteria set within each unit of competency.
If a learner is assessed as Not Yet Competent, they are provided with constructive feedback and further opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities. A helpful analogy is a driver’s licence test you’re either competent to drive or you’re not yet ready. There’s no grade just a clear standard you must meet, and you can attempt it again if needed.
The focus of competency-based training and assessment is on:
- Identifying the tasks and responsibilities required for a specific role
- Determining the knowledge and skills needed to perform those tasks
- Defining the standard of performance expected in the workplace
This approach ensures that training is relevant, practical, and aligned with current industry expectations.
