IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE THEIR LUI NUMBER AT THE TIME OF ENROLMENT INTO THE COURSE
Queensland law requires young people to be earning or learning until they turn 17, or until they achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) QCE or a vocational qualification at Level III or higher.
When a student is registered either by their school or main learning provider like TAFE/alternate Flexi School arrangement, a learning account is created. The student is assigned a Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) which then becomes the account which records enrolments and results of any completed studies in the various types of learning (school based or VET) that may lead to a QCE.
Most students are awarded a QCE at the end of Year 12. Students who do not meet the QCE requirements at the end of Year 12 can continue to work towards their certificate — their learning account remains open, regardless of their age (however credits expire after nine years). Once a person becomes eligible for a QCE, the QCAA will award it in the July or December.
Surf Life Saving Queensland Club Members who have been issued their LUI by their school/main learning provider and who provide it to SLSQ at the time of completing their online student enrolment into the Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) course are eligible to accrue learning towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.
Other awards (SRC/IRB/First Aid related) do not accrue any points.
KEY POINTS TO NOTE:
- LUI numbers are only issued to Queensland students, students who attend interstate schools will not have one
- Surf Life Saving Queensland does not create the LUI, the student must obtain it from their school/main learning provider after they commence Grade 10
- A student’s LUI account must have been opened prior to commencing the course to be eligible to accrue QCE points
- The number of points from the Certificate II in Public Safety will depend on what other vocational education the student has also completed (e.g any VET Certificates such as Hospitality/Childcare/Fitness)
- Clubs/CTOs/TAFs are asked to remind their school age members who are completing a new accredited award that they must provide their LUI number in the Online Student Enrolment (prior to assessment).
- Members who check their LUI accounts should be looking for Qualification names rather than SLSA Surf awards (ie look for Certificate II in Public Safety rather than Bronze Medallion).
REMINDER:
Surf Life Saving Queensland is not the student’s main learning provider and does not open LUI accounts.
If the LUI is not provided by the student in the online student registration at the time of enrolling in the course, they will forgo any points as this will not be done retrospectively.
