It is highly recommended that an IRB be used for water safety (where safe and applicable).
Water Safety personnel in an IRB must be qualified and proficient in the appropriate awards. While undertaking water safety duties they are under the leadership of the Water Safety Supervisor (WSS).
It is compulsory for the IRB Driver and IRB Crewperson to wear an orange cap on their head and tied under their chin and an approved personal flotation device (PFD). A long sleeve orange water safety rash shirt is recommended when the IRB is on the water. If a board-brimmed hat or peaked cap is worn in the IRB it must be worn over the top of the approved SLSA orange cap.
During the activity, the IRB must be on the water and in close proximity to the activity participants. At all times be aware of the safety and welfare of those involved in the activity and immediately report any concerns to the WSS. The crew are responsible for advising the WSS of any pre-existing ailments that may impact on their participation or if their competency does not meet the activity requirements or conditions. An IRB counts towards two times the water safety ratio.
