Why would you need to change a motor propeller?

  • Motor propellers may become damaged due to impact with rocks and sand. Collisions with the motor propeller may result in a damaged propeller (physical damage) or propeller bush e.g. disengaged propeller (propeller does not turn when throttle is applied) or damage to the motor gearbox.
  • If the propeller has been damaged as a result of a propeller strike, this should be reported to the IRB Officer and the motor tagged out until it can be inspected.
  • Motor propellers should only be changed with approval from your IRB Officer as with all maintenance.

How to change a motor propeller

  1. Ensure the kill switch is in the off position and the motor is in neutral.

  1. Using pliers, straighten and remove the split pin (5).
  2. Place a timber block between the propeller and the cavitation plate to hold the propeller.
  3. Using a 17mm spanner or socket, remove the nut (4) and washer (3).

  1. The propeller should now be able to be pulled off. – Remove both the propeller and the thrust holder.
  2. If you are not replacing the propeller immediately, the removed washer, nut and split pin and thrust holder should be put back on the motor after the propeller has been removed.
  3. Prior to reinstalling the propeller/replacement propeller, clean the propeller shaft and thrust holder.
  4. Reapply waterproof grease to propeller shaft, thrust holder and propeller.
  1. Slide the thrust holder and propeller onto the propeller shaft.
  2. Install washer and nut.
  3. Place the timber block between the propeller and cavitation place. Tighten the propeller nut to the specified torque and align one of the groves to the propeller shaft holes and install the split pin. Propeller Nut Torque is 25Nm
  4. When fitting the split pin, ensure the long edge is facing towards you. Once the split pin has been put in successfully, using pliers the outside edge should be bent towards you to secure it in place.

  1. Once complete, check for any forward/backward movement in the prop.
