Duty Statement— IRB Crewperson

It is the role of the IRB Crewperson to assist the IRB Driver in all operational activities under the direction of the IRB Driver.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring the safety of yourself, your driver and the public
  • Checking and assisting with the IRB hull and auxiliary equipment
  • Checking and completing the IRB log
  • Complying with the Powercraft Code of Conduct
  • Assisting with launching and retrieval of the IRB
  • Acknowledging the instructions from the IRB Driver and acting within your training and skills
  • Assist with maintaining balance of the IRB by moving and positioning as required and with maintaining momentum of the IRB
  • Performing rescues (including swimming rescues with a rescue tube)
  • Ensuring that you are wearing a correctly fitted PFD and any other relevant PPE
  • Ensuring the IRB Driver is made aware of any hazards
  • Communicating appropriately and effectively via hand signals
  • Assisting to safely recover the IRB in the event of a capsize or motor/hull failure
  • Assisting with pre and post-operational maintenance under the direction of the IRB Driver
  • Demonstrating safety and respect to others in the water
  • Complying with local and state Standard Operating Procedures and Maritime safety requirements
  • Completing any local/state organisational documentation as required including reporting major equipment wear or damage or personal injury

Duty Statement—IRB Driver

The IRB Driver is considered the vessel master and is responsible for the overall operation of the IRB and is responsible for the IRB, the IRB Crewperson and any passengers.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring the safety of yourself, your IRB Crewperson and the public
  • Conducting pre-operational and post-operational checks of the IRB hull, auxiliary equipment and motor
  • Completing general or basic maintenance that is required to the IRB or motor
  • Checking and completing the IRB log
  • Complying with the Powercraft Code of Conduct
  • Driving the IRB for patrol duties and rescue operations as directed by the Patrol Captain or Incident Commander/Controller
  • Ensuring only qualified personnel are operating the IRB.
  • Giving directions to the IRB Crewperson while in the IRB
  • Communicating appropriately and effectively via radio or hand signals
  • Operating the IRB within its limitations and the limitations of the IRB Crewperson and yourself
  • Demonstrating safety and respect to others in the water
  • Always having your IRB ready to respond and follow standard operating procedures
  • Completing any local/state organisational documentation as required including reporting major equipment wear or damage or personal injury
  • Completing any local/state organisational reporting requirements to relevant water authorities as required
