Why would you need to lay up a motor?

Motors should be laid up when not in use for extended periods to ensure their reliability and to reduce corrosion.

How to lay up a motor.

  1. Ensure the kill switch is in the off position and the motor is in neutral.
  2. The motor will need to be in the upright position.
  3. Remove the motor cowl.
  4. Wash the motor exterior and flush the cooling system thoroughly with fresh water.
  5. Allow the water to drain completely from the motor.
  6. Drain all fuel from the motor and reinstall the drain plug.
  7. Wash any remaining fuel from the power head or outboard.
  8. Wipe off the surfaces of the complete motor.
  9. Remove the spark plugs.
  10. Using a syringe or similar put 5mls for motor oil into each cylinder.
  11. Ensure that the kill switch is in the stop or off position.
  12. Place a cloth over the spark plug holes to catch any expelled motor oil.
  13. Pull the starter cord several times to move the oil through the motor and to as to coat the cylinder walls.
  14. Reinstall the spark plugs.
  15. Change the gear oil.
  16. Grease the motor.
  17. Apply water-displacing fluid to the power head.
  18. Re install the motor cowl
  19. Store the motor in an upright position in a dry place.
