Why would you need to lay up a motor?
Motors should be laid up when not in use for extended periods to ensure their reliability and to reduce corrosion.
How to lay up a motor.
- Ensure the kill switch is in the off position and the motor is in neutral.
- The motor will need to be in the upright position.
- Remove the motor cowl.
- Wash the motor exterior and flush the cooling system thoroughly with fresh water.
- Allow the water to drain completely from the motor.
- Drain all fuel from the motor and reinstall the drain plug.
- Wash any remaining fuel from the power head or outboard.
- Wipe off the surfaces of the complete motor.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Using a syringe or similar put 5mls for motor oil into each cylinder.
- Ensure that the kill switch is in the stop or off position.
- Place a cloth over the spark plug holes to catch any expelled motor oil.
- Pull the starter cord several times to move the oil through the motor and to as to coat the cylinder walls.
- Reinstall the spark plugs.
- Change the gear oil.
- Grease the motor.
- Apply water-displacing fluid to the power head.
- Re install the motor cowl
- Store the motor in an upright position in a dry place.
