Why would you need to change the lower unit gear oil?
- Gear oil replacement is required at regular intervals to reduce wear of the motor gearbox.
- Gear oil should be changed as part of the annual layup maintenance.
- Gear oil will need to be replaced if there is a presence of water. If the presence of water is found in the oil (milky colour) – the cause will need to be rectified prior to returning the motor to service.
How to change the lower unit gear oil.
- Ensure the kill switch is in the off position and the motor is in neutral.
- The motor will need to be in the upright position
- Remove the upper and lower oil plugs and completely drain the gear oil into a suitable oil container (Capacity of the gear box is 360mm).
*It is recommended that the oil plug seals are replaced prior to reassembly.
- Insert the oil tube nozzle into the lower oil plughole and fill with gear oil by squeezing the oil tube until oil flows out of the upper plughole and bubbles disappear to remove any air.
- Install the upper oil plug then remove the oil tube nozzle and install the lower oil plug.
*Use genuine oil or the recommended one (API GL-5: SAE 80 to 90). Required volume is 360ml.
