The following points must be checked regularly throughout operations to ensure the safety of the IRB Crewperson and effective operation of the IRB. The IRB Driver is responsible for ensuring that the following is consistently reviewed:
- That the hull is not damaged and inflated to the correct pressure as per the manufacturer’s specifications
- Foot straps are adjusted to suit and fit both IRB Driver’s and IRB Crewperson’s feet.
- That the fuel cell is checked and secure in the IRB by the fuel clips
- That there is sufficient fuel for the intended area and duration of operations, always allowing for a safety margin
- That the fuel hose is securely connected to the motor and the fuel bulb is primed
- That the motor kill/toggle switch is in the ‘on’ position and the motor starts
- That the motor is secured to the IRB in the middle of the transom by the four arm spin clamps and the safety cable is connected
- All ancillary equipment is stowed correctly
- There are no sharp edges or objects on the hull
- Relevant PPE is operational and worn by all operators
- IRB Driver to have discussion with Patrol Captain/Powercraft Coordinator/Water Safety Coordinator
- That the Powercraft Operating signage is displayed with relevant cones and/or signage to designate the launching area as per your local SOPs
Operator configuration
Procedures outlined in this manual are based on the following operator configurations:
- A proficient IRB Driver and proficient IRB Crewperson
- The IRB Driver being seated near the stern of the IRB on the port (drivers) side buoyancy tube
- The IRB Crewperson being seated near the bow of the IRB on the starboard (crewperson) side buoyancy tube
