Communications are a critical safety aspect when out on the water. Refer to the PSAR Radio Operations module for all radio protocols. Ensure that you consider communications coverage within your area of operation.
When operating a radio in an IRB, it is recommended that the IRB driver carries and operates the radio. The reason for this recommendation is that if the IRB crew needs to exit the IRB for a rescue, then the IRB driver still has line of communication to the beach. The radio can also be a potential hazard for the IRB Crewperson when performing certain crewing positions and patient pick-ups.
Here are some of the key considerations for effectively operating a radio in an IRB:
- Be mindful of background noise due to the motor
- Try and shield the radio from wind where possible
- Don’t use the radio while the IRB is moving unless it is unavoidable.
- Have the radio volume set to max
