Question:

Can KDS-7 stream video through different VLANs?

Answer:

Yes, this is supported.
KDS-7 uses multicast (default) for discovering, streaming, use unicast for part feature or control.
It is possible if the network allows the multicast forwarding between different VLAN. It requires a L3 network switch.

Overview

By default, the KDS-7 family encoders and decoders use multicast as stream forwarding. This document is used for listing all the multicast addresses and all the used ports for the IT administrator configuring the network.

Channel to Multicast IP Map

Different channels need different multicast IP addresses. Also, for supporting free routing, each service has its own multicast IP. So, we can map a multicast IP into following 4 parts:

  • AAA: Fixed value. The valid range to use is 224 to 239. We recommend that you use 225 to 238. the default value is 225. The configuration for it requires FW >= v1.0.0.
  • BBB: Maps to services. Different services have different values (see table below).
  • CCC: Maps to higher 2 digit channel number. For example, if the channel number is ‘123’.
  • DDD: Maps to lower 2 digit of channel number. For example, if the channel number is ‘123’, then DDD will be ‘23’.
