All UAV must maintain separation from manned aircraft so as not to cause a hazard. SLSQ recommends a minimum of 500 feet vertical and 1500 metres horizontal separation. In the event that lack of airspace separation occurs i.e. where there is a risk of the UAV intersecting with the flight path of a crewed aircraft or other UAV, the following actions should be taken:
- Situation assessed by Drone Operator
- If it is safe to do so, land immediately
- If unable to land, controlled altitude descent as low as possible (20m above water)
- Further evasive manoeuvres conducted if necessary
- Do not initiate an RTH – the drone will immediately climb, possibly making the situation worse
In this scenario it is paramount that the Drone Operator act diligently to increase the distance between the two aircraft. A crewed aircraft has right of way over a UAV under all circumstances. Drone operations may encounter other recreational UAV’s within the operational area, use the same actions as the Lack of Separation Scenario to decrease the risk of collision.
Drone Operators should be aware of the airspace around them and potential aircraft movements, such as around airports or areas of military flights.
