Rescue helicopters often fly below 500 feet for operational reasons. For example Lifesaver 45 and 46 fly at 200 feet/65m. This puts them in the same airspace as SLSQ drone operations.

Prior to a Lifesaver helicopter becoming airborne, Surfcom will request that all SLSQ drones be grounded. It is the responsibility of all drone operators to be monitoring their radios at all times and alerting Surfcom of their intentions. This allows Surfcom to have situational awareness of what drone operations are occurring.

Once the Lifesaver helicopter has completed their operations in the area, Surfcom will advise if drones can resume flights. Failure to acknowledge and adhere to this request from Surfcom will be seen as a major breach of the Operations Manual.

If a Drone Operator becomes aware of a member of public or other drone operations which may impact Lifesaver helicopter flights, they should inform Surfcom of the approximate height and location of the UAV. Surfcom will pass the information to Lifesaver 45/46. While awaiting and grounded, and if possible, speak to the UAV operator to inform them of Lifesaver 45/46 movements.
