INTENT CLARIFICATIONS
With this Imperative, ILFI envisions a world of Living Buildings composed of transparently disclosed products that are free of ingredients that pose a risk to human health or the environment. This goal calls for a transformation of the materials market that is dependent upon, among other players, manufacturers creating, project teams specifying, and contractors installing products that meet the Imperative’s Red List avoidance and transparency requirements. Breakdowns in this transparency loop and failure to demonstrate and communicate these material success stories hinder our progress as a green building community.
The ultimate goal is that project teams seek, prioritize, and advocate for products with public ingredient disclosure of 100% of intentionally added ingredients plus residuals, with associated CASRNs present at 100 parts per million (ppm), or .01%, in the final product, for a minimum of 90% of the installed materials by cost. The impact of requesting, prioritizing, and installing products with publicly disclosed ingredients (especially those that are Third Party Verified) and Red List avoidance cannot be overstated. Indeed, it is the consistency of this ask and this action that moves the market towards the future that we seek full of healthy products for all.
While the materials market continues to advance and make transparently disclosed, healthy materials standard practice, ILFI recognizes the current limitations to the availability of such products within certain product categories. 100 ppm content inventory disclosure, public or private, represents a granularity of data that is currently difficult to source outside certain product categories. Additionally, Red List ingredients are still unavoidable in many product categories or may be required by building codes in certain jurisdictions.
Therefore, Exceptions have been published to address specific market and code limitations. Some of these Exceptions address specific chemical groups or product application limitations. Others, including RL-018 Inventory Threshold Exception, RL-004a Proprietary Ingredients Exception, and RL-001 General Red List Exception are available for use on all materials when other options have been exhausted, there are gaps in information, adequate public disclosure of ingredients is unavailable, or market availability of products without Red List ingredients is limited.
