At Upper Elementary, we encourage students to leave personal devices (especially cell phones and smart watches) at home. Research indicates that student achievement increases 6% when phones are left out of the classroom. If parents choose to allow their student to bring a personal device, it must be powered off and kept in a locker from the opening bell to dismissal.

  • Personal Technology includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, smart watches, iPads, ear buds, etc.
  • Student personal devices are not permitted in hallways and classrooms during school or the After-School Program.
  • These devices must be turned off and kept in lockers from the opening bell to dismissal.
  • If a student violates this policy, the teacher may hold the device for the remainder of the day and return it to the student at dismissal.
  • On the 4th policy violation, the student’s device will be given to the Principal and an action plan will be created with the parent.

Additional Guidelines

  • Students may use a phone in the office to contact parents.
  • All students are to request a pass from the classroom teacher to go to the health office where the nurse (not the student) will phone the parent if necessary for the child to go home due to illness.
  • Texting during class hours is not permitted via any device including cell phone, smart watch, iPad, or any other similar personal devices.
  • We ask that parents avoid texting their student from 7:55 a.m. – 3:10 p.m.
  • For student safety, CHCA maintains the right to monitor browser history while using CHCA’s computer network on either school-owned or personal technology.
