Year one has been one of reconnecting and connecting. Reconnecting with friends throughout our synod and connecting with new friends not only in our synod but in Region 8 and ELCA Churchwide. To say it has been a learning year would be a true understatement. While the curve has been a steep climb, it has been one filled with support and encouragement from many folks. My appreciation and gratitude go out to my predecessor Mr. Paul Wangerin and Bishop Riegel for their willingness to answer questions (even the silliest ones) and to provide advice as I navigate my way this first year.
My first stop on the road was at the WELCA conference in July at Caanan. There I was able to bring greetings from our Synod and enjoy their KIND hospitality. This is a group of dedicated women interested in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through acts of service. My prayer is that they will grow in number and become more visible throughout our synod.
My next stop was at the Region 8 meeting of Bishops and Synod Vice Presidents. While a little overwhelming I returned home with a better understanding of how the WV/WMD Synod is connected to others within our region. Laughter (the kind that makes your side hurt and tears flow from your eyes) and fellowship were combined with serious conversations centered around fulfilling each Synod’s mission. We will gather again in the fall, this time in Gettysburg, to continue our conversation.
March 7-9, found me in Chicago meeting with Synod Vice Presidents across the ELCA. Three days full of networking and learning. While there is a monthly Vice Presidents meeting via zoom, this was the first time Synod VP’s have met in person for several years due to the pandemic. The educational sessions were very informative and the Worship service in the Chapel uplifting. I returned home renewed and revitalized.
Here on our home turf, Synod Council continues to meet quarterly. This year our goal has been to meet rotate meetings around the synod. Our goal is to visit all conferences before the end of the year. Time is dedicated to listening to Clergy and lay leadership they share their hopes, dreams and challenges they face post pandemic, as well as, determining how Synod Council might provide support. To date we have met in Martinsburg and Morgantown. This summer we are looking to meet in Wheeling. Fall will find us in the Charleston area. The message we want to send is: This is YOUR synod. Come walk the road with us, and let us know what you need.
Finally, let me close by saying this has been an amazing year! I am honored to serve as YOUR vice president. I want to thank all our Council members for their faithful work this past year. Their input has been invaluable as we chart our course for the future. I pray that our Gracious God would continue to provide guidance, strength and blessings to the work of our Bishop, DEM, Synod Council, and all our congregations in the WV/WMD Synod.
Nancy Weeks
WV/WMD Synod Vice President
