The Mount Royal University Diploma Program adheres to the Accreditation Standards set forth by the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW). The ACSW is responsible to ensure that all Social Work Programs in the Province of Alberta adhere to the required standards. The Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) is also the professional regulatory body for social workers in Alberta. Under the Health Professions Act, implemented for social workers in 2003, the ACSW has responsibility for approving programs of study for purposes of registration requirements. Social work education combines scientific inquiry with the teaching of professional and competency skills to provide effective and ethical social work services. Social work educators reflect their identification with the profession through their teaching, scholarship, and service. This manual provides the standards, procedures, and guidelines for the accreditation /reaccreditation process for Alberta-based Social Work diploma programs. It should also be noted that the accreditation /re-accreditation process outlined interrelate with the Canadian Association for Social Work Education accreditation/re-accreditation process. The purpose of practica is to assist students in transferring classroom learning of theoretical and conceptual elements of social work into practice in the community. The ACSW requires students to complete 700 hours of practicum in order to graduate from a SW Diploma Program in the Province of Alberta. Learning objectives for all diploma practicums are intentionally connected to the development of practice skills that ready them for ongoing work in the field of social work.
