rules about our students going out
• All students are given these rules and sign a contract at the beginning of their stay with us agreeing to them:
• A student of 13 or below is not allowed out in the daytime or evening ever on their own and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
• Students of 14 or 15, are allowed out in the day time to the host family’s local town or village, ie to a local shopping centre with a friend where possible. They must have a mobile phone with them and be back before dark at an appointed time. They are under no circumstances allowed to go to London or any other place other than your local town on their own or with a friend—if a student travels further afield they must be accompanied by an adult.
• Students of 16 plus are allowed out in the day time locally. If they are 16 years old, they are allowed to go further afield i.e to London, ideally with a friend, but they must be back before dark and must remain in telephone contact with their host family.
• Students of 17 plus are allowed to go to London or other places all day and into the evening but must be back by 11pm at night. They must travel with a friend if they are out after dark and not on their own.
• All students going out on their own must have a mobile telephone with them fully charged up and switched on at all times. If they do not answer their telephone for a period of more than 3 hours this is breaking the rules of our programme.
NO BRIGHT WORLD GUARDIANSHIPS STUDENT IS ALLOWED TO STAY OUT OVERNIGHT WITHOUT THEIR PARENTS’ PERMISSION AND WITH SUFFICIENT NOTICE. STAYING OUT OVERNIGHT CANNOT BE DECIDED ON THE DAY OF TRAVEL. ALL STUDENTS KNOW THIS AS THEY HAVE SIGNED A STUDENT CHARTER AT THE BEGINNING OF THEIR PROGRAMME
Bedtimes
Bright World students of 14 years and over should respect the bed time of the host family. Older students may stay awake later in their room after bedtime but should not disturb other members of your family. For younger students you may wish to impose an earlier routine such as 8 or 9pm for under 13s and 10pm for 14 year olds.
Missing students
The Directors of Bright World have the ultimate responsibility for ensuring the progression of any missing or absent student reports.
Please try to contact your student if you are ever unsure of their whereabouts. If you cannot contact the student and/or you have not physically seen them, please get in touch with any of their local friends or relatives for whom you have contact details. If you cannot locate the student and they are under 18, you must call the Bright World emergency telephone 01273 836060 if out of hours , or the office 01273 835745 during office hours straight away to report your concerns. If you are seriously concerned and cannot reach anyone at Bright World, please contact the police.
Please refer to our Absent or Missing students policy available to you in this manual.
inviting friends to stay with our host families
In principle, if families have room then we do not mind this happening but in order that everything is formalised, the student’s friend needs to join our Temporary Guardianship scheme. This means that we need their parent or guardian to enrol them temporarily onto our guardianship programme for the duration of the stay. We need a form completed with medical questions and payment of a fee plus the homestay fees. If your student approaches you about this please do not deal with the student directly but refer it back to us. This way you are protected by our guardianship organisation and will be guaranteed payment.
