Below is an example of items to check on the RWC. Operators should ensure they check their local SOPs for operational checklists, specific to their site, nature of operations and model of RWC as this may vary.

Hull

  • Inspect the hull for cracks, dents, or other signs of damage that could affect buoyancy or performance.
  • Check that the bungs (drain plugs) are securely fitted and there are no leaks in the hull.
  • Ensure any protective coatings or anti-corrosion treatments on the hull are intact (if applicable).
  • Examine the intake grate of the craft for any debris, damage, or corrosion that could impede operation.
  • Check for any excess water or fluid in the hull.
  • Check seats, seals on seat covers and storage compartments are in good condition and secured correctly.

Engine Bay Checks

  • Ensure there is no free oil or oil residue in the engine bay.
  • Ensure all hose clamps, fittings and straps are secure and free from excessive damage or corrosion.
  • Check Fuel Water separator (if applicable).
  • Ensure the battery is secure.
  • Ensure battery terminals are tight and secure.

Fluid Levels

  • Verify that the fuel tank is full and there are no visible leaks in the fuel system.
  • Check engine oil level (if applicable), ensuring it meets the manufacturer’s recommended level.
  • Inspect coolant levels (if applicable) to ensure the engine is adequately protected from overheating.
  • Check for any signs of fluid leaks around the engine or RWC body.

Engine Function and Throttle/Kill Switch

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle for a few seconds; listen for unusual noises or vibrations, check for alarms/ warning lights.
  • Test the throttle to ensure smooth acceleration and deceleration.
  • Confirm neutral/reversing throttle is operating correctly.
  • Check the bucket is operating correctly.
  • Test the kill switch to confirm it operates correctly and shuts off the engine immediately.
  • Check the steering for correct operation, paying particular attention to freedom and range of movement of the handle bars and corresponding movement and security of the jet nozzle.

Rescue Sleds

  • Attachment Points: Inspect all straps and connectors securing the sled to the RWC. Ensure they are tight, undamaged, and securely fastened to prevent detachment during use. Also check hull attachment points for structural integrity.
  • Surface Condition: Check the surface of the sled for cracks, tears, or wear that could compromise its integrity or comfort for patients.
  • Handles and Grips: Ensure all handles, grips, or securing points on the sled are firmly attached and free of damage for easy and safe use by Operators or patients.
  • Inflation (where applicable): Ensure that Sled is appropriately inflated as per manufacturer specifications, with no leaks.

Auxiliary and Safety Equipment

  • Confirm personal flotation devices (PFDs) are present, functional, and compliant with safety regulations.
  • Inspect the mandatory auxiliary equipment including the tube and knife for damage or wear and ensure that it is correctly stowed.
  • Check that all necessary optional auxiliary equipment is available as applicable for your operations, and that it is in good condition, and properly stowed.
  • Ensure communication devices (radio, GPS, etc.) are prepared as required, functional and fully charged.

Trailer Checks

  • Ensure the RWC is properly secured to the trailer.
  • The winch handle is fitted (as required) and winch is tight.
  • Check that the safety chain secured to the RWC.
  • Check that applicable trailer/ RWC tie-down straps are fitted and fastened as applicable for RWC transport to the launch location.
  • Check the condition of the rollers and that rollers and/or pads that are used to support the RWC are in contact with the RWC at all times.
  • Check trailer condition (including number plate, mudguards, jockey wheel, tyres).
  • Check tyre inflation pressure is suitable for specific use as required i.e. beach or road.
  • Inspect the condition of the tow coupling and trailer safety chain. If applicable inspect the trailer plug (including that the trailer tail lights, brake and indicators are functioning correctly).
  • Check that the tow hitch and trailer safety chain are correctly attached to the tow vehicle.
