Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory for all RWC Operators to ensure their safety during operation.
Mandatory PPE
In accordance with SLSA Gear and Equipment brand guidelines:
- SLSA Approved PFD : Provides buoyancy and ensures the Operator remains afloat if they enter the water unexpectedly.
- SLSA Approved Helmet (red and/or yellow): Protects against head injuries from impact with the RWC, water, or other objects.
- Approved Long sleeve Red and/or Yellow Rash Shirt/Wetsuit Top: Provides protection from the elements and visibility for the Operator (Orange is permitted and recommended for water safety operations).
- Approved SLS Branded Wetsuit: (as per the SLSA Gear and Equipment brand guidelines): Provides thermal and UV protection from the elements, impact protection (such as potential exposure to the jet blast from the RWC jet.) It also enhances identification and visibility of the Operator.
SLSA approved wetsuits come in options that include full length, short length, and 2-piece option’s (link and add photos). It is mandatory that the Operators at a minimum a wetsuit bottom and long sleeve high viz rash shirt (as appropriate for the duties they are undertaking) however can choose to wear any of the options available.
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
All members on an RWC must wear an approved PFD at all times and for all types of operations. Patients rescued from the water are not required to wear a PFD. If the Operator or Crewperson is entering the water to perform a rescue or to secure the patient in a rescue situation, they should keep their PFD on for their own safety. If a spray jacket (or similar) is worn, it must be underneath the PFD. i.e. The PFD must be worn on top of all other garments.
