Armed/Dangerous Intruder
- If you see a suspicious person or armed intruder, notify school administration officials. If the person is obviously about to cause serious harm, call 911 immediately.
- If the threat is real, a “CODE RED” will be announced over the intercom.
- Follow Lockdown procedures listed on page 20.
- School administrator or designee will designate a location for a command center and will document all decisions made and all actions taken, noting the time and action or decision. The Command Center will be established in the Administration Conference Room (118) on Upper Campus and in the kitchen in the gym on Lower Campus if it is deemed safe by police.
- Limit access to crime scenes to those in authority.
- If a hostage situation occurs avoid confrontation with the intruder and give a list of those being held hostage to administration (if possible). Follow the Lockdown procedures for the rest of the school.
Active Shooter
“Active Shooter Situations” are defined by FEMA as those where an individual is “actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area”.
- Respond Immediately. It is not uncommon for people confronted with a threat to first deny the possible danger rather than respond.
- As soon as it is possible – CALL 911
- Train staff & students on the “Run-Hide-Fight” Response Plan.
“Run-Hide-Fight” Response Plan
Run
If it is safe to do so for yourself and those in your care, the first course of action that should be taken is to run out of the building or to the nearest safe place as far away until you are in a safe situation.
- Leave personal belongings behind.
- Visualize possible escape routes, including physically accessible routes for students and staff with disabilities.
- Avoid elevators.
- Train students to take others with them, but not to stay behind because others will not go.
- Call 911 when it is safe to do so.
- Let administration or first responders know where you are.
Hide
If running is not a safe option, hide in as safe a place as possible. Follow the same type of procedures as a Lock Down.
Students and staff should be trained to hide in a location where the walls might be thicker and have fewer windows.
- If outside, move away from the threat as far as possible.
- Classroom teachers should lock all doors to the classroom and take roll to account for all students.
- Immediately move all students away from windows and doors.
- Close and lock any open windows, close blinds, turn off all lights, including lights on Apple TV or CleverTouch.
- Silence all electronic devices and remain silent.
- Lockdown remains in effect until law enforcement clears each room.
Fight
If neither running or hiding is a safe option, as a last resort when confronted by an armed intruder, individuals in immediate danger should consider trying to disrupt or incapacitate the armed intruder by using aggressive force and items in their environment, such as fire extinguishers and chairs. This is certainly not a requirement and staff and students should not interfere with law enforcement.
