Camp Luther 2017 – Synod Assembly Report

Camp Luther 2017 was held on June 18-24 at Camp Caesar in Cowen, WV. This was our 72nd year and we met under the theme “The Water of Life.” We were blessed to welcome 271 campers and 85 staff members for our week of camp.

The financial report for 2017 follows the written report. We were able to keep the cost of camp at $210 for our fourth year while providing each camper a T-shirt with their registration. Congregations, former campers, and other individuals continue to support camper participation by providing partial and full scholarships. We would like to thank Salem Lutheran Church, Boonsboro, MD, for a generous donation to fund a scholarship program to encourage more kids to come and experience Camp Luther.

This year will mark the final year that Rick Crummitt (First English, Wheeling) will serve as Junior Co-Dean. We have been blessed by his service in this position and thank him for the positive impact he has made on the program. In 2019, William “Bill” Ack (Trinity, Keyser) will assume the position of Junior Co-Dean and will work with our continuing co-dean Valerie Roe (Christ, Wheeling). We have been blessed to have great people from our synod step up to lead all of our camper programs.

We celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with a special Camp Luther logo with Luther’s Rose in the middle (see above), and the planting of our synod’s Reformation Tree on the grounds of Camp Caesar. Bishop Riegel led the blessing of the tree during camp with many campers and staff present. The tree is located across Route 20 from the main camp in the campground & picnic area so passers-by can visit the tree and watch it grow!

We thank our congregations and pastors for their support and helping get our campers to camp each year. We thank the synod for your monetary support and the prayers that ascend for our camp each summer during the third week of June!

Respectfully submitted,
The Rev. Jason Felici
Director, 2016-2019
