- Immediately evacuate the building at the sound of the fire alarm or notification to evacuate via the public address system.
- Students should leave the classroom single file and proceed outside to the designated area, with no talking, running, or pushing, but with orderly, rapid walking.
- The first student is a key person and should lead the class. Do not stop until reaching the designated area unless there is need to divert due to a dangerous situation. The last student exiting (preferably a teacher) a section of the building should close the outside doors.
- Before leaving the classroom, teachers should:
- check to make sure all students are out,
- take the Grab and Go Bag,
- turn out the lights,
- close the door (unlocked),
- walk near the end of the class line.
- If an area is barricaded, use the next nearest safe exit.
- After reaching designated area: Teacher should take roll using the roster in the front of the Emergency Action Plan binder. Remind students there is no talking. A staff member will notify the administration of any missing students.
- School administration will give a verbal or manual “all clear” to return to the building after the fire officials have determined the building to be safe.
