Death in Student’s Immediate Family
- Inform administrators who will verify the death and notify the student’s teachers.
- Administrators and teachers will work together to plan how to inform the student’s peers and talk to them regarding the death. Involve clergy where possible.
- PTF, Administration and/or teachers will arrange for remembrance from class/school; i.e. food, cards, flowers.
- Appropriate school personnel may make a visit to the family and arrange to attend funeral/memorial services. Administration will designate those to attend.
- The administrator and teachers will prepare to have support for the student when he/she returns to school and to monitor the student as needed.
Death of a Student or Staff Member
Immediate Actions To Be Taken:
- Notify school administrators.
- Administration will verify the death with local officials and/or parents/family.
- A crisis team composed of administrators, teachers, and pastors will develop a plan.
- The Head of School will notify the Board Chairman.
- Contact Wake County Mental Health Services for assistance if necessary.
Follow-through Actions by School Administration Officials:
- Update information concerning the death.
- Follow crisis plan for the day: Make announcements and Counsel students
- Make arrangements for appropriate staff to attend the funeral.
- Identify and follow students/staff most affected by the tragedy.
- Plan for an appropriate memorial.
- The Head of School or designee will speak with the media if necessary.
