Effective June 2024, Virtual Oral Examination (VOE) sessions may be recorded at the discretion of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) in support of online examination administration and scoring functions.

Candidate Disclosure and Consent

Prior to the examination, candidates will be notified by email about the Board’s policy on examination recording. The policy will also be posted for review in the Candidate Manual and added to the Candidate Agreement. At the time of sign-in for the examination, in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws, candidates will be prompted to consent to allowing their examination sessions to be recorded by the ABO. Candidates who do not grant permission for their examination to be recorded will not be permitted to be examined.

Consent Statement: I authorize the ABO to record my performance during this examination, including video of my likeness and audio of my voice while I take the exam. I understand that such recordings will: i) be used for ABO’s internal examination scoring purposes only, ii) not be made available to me for any reason (including, without limitation, for any appeals regarding my exam score), and iii) be destroyed on or about the date that examination results are released to candidates in accordance with ABO retention policies. I further understand that interfering with this recording, or producing my own recording during this examination, will result in the immediate invalidation of my results, the loss of my registration fee, and exclusion from future examinations.

Recording Purpose

Recordings made by the ABO will support administrative scoring processes for the examination and will remain confidential. Recordings will be used only to produce new scores for unscored candidate performances and will not be used to re-review or challenge previously scored performances, investigate exam irregularities, or litigate reports of disruptive behaviors. Recordings will not be used to adjudicate candidate appeals to published results.

Recording Scope

Active examination sessions will be recorded by ABO personnel according to criteria established by the Board prior to the examination and may be based on factors such as the number of examiners in each room. Individual candidates may have some, all, or none of their examination sessions recorded.

Review and Retention

Examination recordings will be stored in an encrypted location and reviewed following the examination by authorized ABO personnel for scoring purposes only. Neither candidates nor examiners may request to view or download recordings of the examination. All recorded material will be permanently destroyed on or about the date that examination results are released to candidates. No backup copies will be maintained.

Compliance

It is strictly prohibited for candidates to make any attempts to manipulate or interfere with the examination recording process or to produce their own audio or visual recordings of any part of the examination. Violation of this policy will result in immediate disqualification of results in accordance with the candidate agreement
