Through the Continuing Certification program, the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) assures patients and the public that physicians are keeping their clinical knowledge and skills up to date. We verify career-long learning and improvement by asking diplomates to periodically engage in the Quarterly Questions® assessment program, complete two activities from the Improvement in Medical Practice Menu, and, in regular two-year intervals throughout the 10-year certification cycle, attest to earning at least 50 CME credits including 16 credits of self-assessment.

Beginning July 2025, the ABO will audit diplomates in Year 3 of the 10-year recertification cycle who have not demonstrated compliance with these requirements.

Individuals selected for an audit will be asked to submit documentation for CME credits earned during the first two years of their certification cycle.

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Standards for Continuing Certification require that Member Boards should have a process to verify attestation for participation standards. The ABO’s policy was implemented in 2025 by the ABO Continuing Certification Committee to remain compliant with ABMS Standards.
