AARP Foundation Experience Corps volunteers are distinguished by their knowledge of effective K-3 literacy tutoring and mentoring strategies. This is accomplished through intensive and on-going training. New volunteers receive a minimum of 25 hours of training before and during volunteering (pre-service and in-service) over the course of their first year. Returning volunteers receive 20 hours of continued in-service training each school year during their service. Staff and volunteers are trained using a comprehensive set of training resources that seek to create consistency of knowledge in our programs across the country.

Entering Time via the AARP Volunteer Portal

AARP Foundation Experience Corps expects volunteers to record their time served in increments of 15 minutes (0.25 hours) with the designations of training, tutoring and monitoring described below:

Seek guidance from your local program staff or site coordinator for specific details on how to record your time.

Assessing Students’ Social-Emotional Learning

AARP Foundation Experience Corps expects volunteers to observe and report on students’ social-emotional learning indicators three times per year. Social and emotional learning (SEL) describes the processes through which humans acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage personal emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and display empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make caring and informed decisions. We have identified the following five indicators of SEL as relevant to our structured session.

  • Self-Management: How well students manage their emotions.
  • Self-Efficacy: Perceptions of how much students believe than can succeed in achieving academic outcomes
  • Effort: How much effort students put into school and learning
  • Emotion Regulation: How well students regulate their emotions.
  • Engagement: How attentive and invested students are in school

Tracking students’ SEL indicators is critical for our program to assess, evaluate and demonstrate our impact. Therefore, completing SEL assessments is a necessary and required aspect of program.
