You are responsible for finding out whether you are required to have a visa to enter your country of destination or transit. Information about foreign entry requirements for each country you will visit or travel through is available on the Department of State web page: http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/country.html.
There is typically a cost for a visa, which is usually issued in the United States by the embassy or consulate of the country in which you will be studying abroad.
Since visas are usually added to a person’s passport, you must have a valid passport with empty pages in order to apply for a visa.
Again, embassies usually require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond your expected return date; if it’s not, they will not issue you a visa.
If you are a non-US citizen you may have different entry and visa requirements. Check with the embassies of all the countries to you will travel to or transit through for further instructions, as well as with your instructor.
