Components to Part 1: Fluency Practice

For each tutoring session, you will conduct Skill-Building Activities, Part 1, in the following way:
Hold onto one copy of the fluency practice book and provide a copy of the same book to each student.

Focus on a short section (approximately one-quarter of the book or less) per session.

  • Preview the section with the students prior to reading.
  • Have students identify words they don’t know, tell them what the word is, and have them repeat it.
  • Briefly point out any graphs/charts/illustration within the section.

Read the same section multiple times.

  • Repetition increases fluency and builds confidence.
  • Have students practice the same section three to five times per session using the reading games described HERE (Page 33 in printed Tutor Manual).
  • Have all students participate by reading silently and following along using a bookmark.
  • Continue to read each section independently until the entire book has been read, at which point the students will read the book from beginning to end.

Build the students’ home library by providing them with the book once they have successfully read it from beginning to end. If working with a small group, wait until each student in the group has had an opportunity to participate in the whole-book read before sending the books home.

Return the tutor’s unmarked copy to the storage box.

Fluency Practice Books for Grades 1-3

Fluency practice books are informational text with a range of topics for students to explore. Program staff will guide you to the book groups appropriate for your students.

During the first session or two, tutors will engage students in a conversation about their interest in topics available for fluency practice. Tutors should then select the first book listed in the assigned book group that is associated with that topic. Tutors and students have flexibility to explore additional books on the initial topic, or other books of interest within the identified book group.

Regardless of the content of the Skill-Building section of the program, all tutors will follow the same 30-minute session structure.

Teachers, site coordinators or reading coaches will provide guidance on the appropriate starting point for students. Tutors do not make the placement decisions.
