Dear Valued Volunteer,
Let me be one of the first to welcome you to the AARP Foundation and our nationwide network of volunteers and staff. You are one of tens of thousands of adults age 50 and older who, since 1995, will serve students through our evidence-based intergenerational tutoring program, Experience Corps. What’s more, you are one of 60,000+ active volunteers who are making positive impacts in cities and states across the country on behalf of AARP.
We know that you have joined AARP Foundation Experience Corps because you are committed to helping your local students improve their literacy skills. While we believe that all students are positively impacted by our program, it is a proven fact that 65% of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year improved their reading and literacy performance by at least a half grade by the end of the year and, thus, are more likely to graduate high school. We owe the success of our students to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. Please know that our program staff are committed to your success as a volunteer and that we are working to make your time spent as effortless, and your overall experience as satisfying, as possible.
It is very important that we are aligned on certain aspects of the program in order to achieve our shared mission. Therefore, I ask you to take the time to review the information and policies outlined in this handbook to better understand what is expected of you as a volunteer. Additionally, I ask that you take full advantage of all the resources we provide that are available to you to improve your own experience and to help strengthen our nationwide network of literacy advocates.
Together, we will continue AARP Foundation Experience Corps’ legacy of building equity and improving outcomes for those most in need. For that, we deeply appreciate your willingness and energy in joining us.
Yours in Service,
Mioshi Moses
