Resolution #2: Feed the Microbiome
- Symptoms are the branches and not the root
Anatomy of the Digestion Track - Mouth to Esophagus
- Esophagus to Stomach
- Stomach to Large Intestine
- Large Intestine to Small Intestine
- Small Intestine to Pancreas
- Pancreas to Liver
- Liver to gall bladder
- Anus
- Appendix
**Secrets to Healthy Digestion
- Chewing food
- Water
- Probiotics
- Stomach Acid
- Enzymes
- Fiber
**Functions of the digestive system
- Ingestion
- Mechanical Processing
- Digestion
- Secretion absorption
- Extraction
- Protection
- Transit time
Omics (Systems biology)
- The study of interactions and connections in the body
- Nothing in biology acts alone or isolated
- genome, epigenome, and connectome
Complex systems are impacted by myriad external factors and insults
Why one’s reactions is different than another
Omnics goal is preventative more than corrective
How to Impact the Microbiome
- Improve balance
- 40 trillion bacteria = (roughly) the number of human cells
- Larger than liver in size and function
- 5-10 million genes in the Microbiome (metagenome)
- Compared to 22,000 in human genes
- It’s the most prolific in the digestive system especially large intestine
- Gut brain, hormone, immune
- It’s a connectome
Beneficial vs. Harmful Microbiome - Commensals = always present and beneficial
- Transients = Come from different sources like food or probiotics (not present long-term)
- Pathogens = disease-causing microbes
- Pathobionts = Commensals that can cause disease when overgrown in the wrong place (Ie: Candida)
**Microbial Variations
- Body region
- PH
- Oxygen
- Lifespan
- Location = people in non-industrialized societies tend to have more diversity healthy vs. unhealthy
- Dietary variations
**What Disrupts the Microbial Terrain
- NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen)
- Antibiotics, birth control, antacids, steroids
- Chronic Inflammation from stress or infection
- Eating foods you may be allergic to and perhaps not know it (ie: Dairy, gluten and alcohol)
- Eating processed foods high in hydrogenated oils, vegetable oils, and refined carbohydrates
- Lack of fermentable fiber
How to Feed the Microbiome - Ferments
- Resistant Starches
- Polyphenol Rich Food
(These create root cause resolution)
