1. Visual Inspection

  • Check the retention straps for any signs of fraying, cuts, excessive wear, or missing stitching.
  • Inspect the buckle and adjustment mechanisms for cracks, deformation, or missing components.
  • Ensure all rivets, screws, and attachment points are secure and not loose.

2. Functional Check

  • Buckle and unbuckle the retention system several times to confirm smooth operation.
  • Adjust the strap tension to verify that it holds securely under slight pulling force.
  • Ensure the chin pad (if applicable) is properly seated and free of excessive wear.

3. Fit & Adjustment Test

  • Put on the helmet and fasten the retention system snugly.
  • Perform a head shake test to ensure the helmet remains secure without excessive movement.
  • Adjust the tensioners or sliders as needed for a proper fit.

Pass/Fail Criteria

PASS: Retention system operates smoothly, securely fastens, and has no visible defects.
FAIL: Any signs of damage, excessive wear, malfunctioning buckles, or insecure fit – DO NOT USE until repaired or replaced.

Refer to Maintenance Status Traffic Light Checklist to determine Serviceable condonation or if faults are Unserviceable, not recommended to fly with helmet until faults are resolved.
