The r3dback printer is very durable if taken care of properly. To ensure damage is not caused to the device please take the following into consideration:
- Do not use brute force on the machine. It is precision equipment not designed to take physical abuse or careless tightening of components (including belts).
- Do not unplug electronics (controller module, hot ends or extruders) while there is power to the machine, always switch off before any such maintenance as doing otherwise will damage sensitive electronics.
- Carefully watch the beginning of the first layer of a print to ensure the nozzles are not gouging into the print surface. Have your hand ready over the emergency stop to prevent damage to the print surface, and / or hotends. If your hotends are grinding into the print surface, stop the print immediately and re-level the bed
- Regularly wipe the smooth rails (once per week) with a clean tissue and re-oil with fine machine oil such as that used in sewing machines.
- If you intend on using the heated bed, first warm up the heated bed to 70C for 15-20 minutes and then run the bed level. As materials expand when they are hot, the nozzle will be closer to the bed and may grind into it if you have previously leveled the bed for while cold (for PLA for example)
- Never run the heated bed above 90C. Too much heat will damage the unit and is not necessary for prints. Running too high a temperature will cause the system power to completely shut down until it cools.
