The Social Studies course offerings enable a student to acquire skills and develop understandings necessary for citizenship in our society. To achieve these goals, the department provides an extensive and flexible program through the four years of high school. A student has the opportunity to experience four years of Social Studies courses in geography, the histories, political sciences, economics, cultural studies and the behavioral sciences. To facilitate student course selection, the offerings in this guide are grouped by academic strand. Students may choose courses in any strand.

THREE (3) YEARS OF SOCIAL STUDIES ARE RECOMMENDED IN ORDER TO GAIN ADMISSION TO ILLINOIS PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES. TWO AND ONE HALF YEARS (2 1/2) ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS TO GRADUATE FROM DISTRICT 203 HIGH SCHOOLS.

Specific coursework required for graduation:
1 credit in U.S. History (10-12)
½ credit in American Government (10-12)
