Course Fee
This entry-level course is designed for students who display basic technical skill on brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments. The curriculum is designed to build a foundation for future involvement in the intermediate and advanced bands, with a focus on performance skills. In addition, this course will allow the youngest and/or least experienced students to develop as musicians by refining technique, tone quality, and musical expression through performance in band. Literature will be varied for the study of different styles and music notation and terminology; appropriate level rhythm studies will be included. Private study is encouraged. Solo and ensemble participation is encouraged at the director’s discretion. Students are responsible for obtaining the appropriate instruments, sticks/mallets (as directed) for daily ensemble usage.

This is an intermediate wind and percussion ensemble for those students who have achieved a basic level of proficiency fostering fundamental performance expectations, musical literature study, and a developing degree of music appreciation. This course is designed to allow students to develop as musicians by refining technique, tone quality, and musical expression through performance in band. Private study is highly encouraged. Public performances include regular concerts and festival participation, both local and otherwise. Attendance at all performances is mandatory. There are also community contribution performances each year. This course is designed to build on a foundation for future involvement in the advanced band(s). Students are responsible for obtaining the appropriate instruments, sticks/mallets (as directed) for daily ensemble usage. Participation in solo/ensemble festival is expected.

This course is designed to allow students to develop as musicians by refining technique, tone quality, and musical expression through performance in band. Private study is highly recommended. Public performances include regular concerts and festival participation, both local and otherwise; some weekend travel performance is expected. Attendance at all performances is mandatory. There are also community contribution performances each year. This course is designed to build on a foundation for future involvement in the advanced band. Advanced Band

Course Fee
This is the most advanced wind and percussion ensemble for those students who have achieved a high level of proficiency. This course is designed as a college preparatory ensemble fostering exemplary rehearsal and performance expectations and a high degree of music appreciation. Daily practice and continued private study are recommended in order to maintain the highest performance level of this ensemble. Students will further develop in the areas of technique, tone quality, and musical expression while performing advanced literature, both in full band and in small ensembles. Public performances include regular concerts and festival participation, both local and otherwise. Attendance is required at all performances, including weekend travel performances. Participation in solo and ensemble festival is also a requirement. Opportunities to participate in ILMEA District and All-State Festival Bands, and other programs are offered at the director’s discretion. There are also community contribution performances each year. Students are responsible for obtaining the appropriate instruments, sticks/mallets (as directed) for daily ensemble usage. Participation in solo/ensemble festival is expected.

String and theory lessons from these previous courses are drawn upon to move toward a more sophisticated level of performance. Intermediate/Advanced Orchestra may combine with winds and brass for a full symphony orchestra experience. This orchestra may also combine with the Advanced High School Orchestra for large string ensemble works. All performances, while outside of school hours, are considered part of the course requirements and attendance is required. Opportunity is also given to students to perform in small ensembles and as soloists.

Advanced Orchestra is for string students selected by previous performance as a member of Introduction to High School Orchestra, Intermediate/Advanced High School Orchestra, Intermediate High School Orchestra, or by private audition (transfer students). Class work includes individual work on both technical skill and overall musicianship with emphasis on developing leadership skills for the string musician. Advanced High School Orchestra combines with the top musicians of the Advanced High School Band to form a full sized Symphony Orchestra. Advanced High School Orchestra performs many concerts each year including both string orchestra concerts and symphony orchestra concerts. All performances, while outside of school hours, are considered part of the course requirements and attendance is required. Opportunity is also given to students to perform in small ensembles and as soloists.

Course Fee
Music Theory 1 covers the harmonic elements commonly used by composers and how these elements are used. Knowledge of the piano keyboard is helpful and the ability to read either treble or bass clef basic notation is a prerequisite. Areas of study in Music Theory 1 include notation, counting, meters, intervals, choral structure and keyboard harmony, transposition and fundamental instrumental arranging and scoring. Students will write four part arrangements and learn to score these original compositions for various ensembles. The technology components of Finale will be used to augment the class experience. Rhythmic and harmonic ear training will also be practiced, and sight singing will foster students’ growth of aural training. This course will prepare students for AP Music Theory.

Music Capstone

This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to fulfill a self-directed inquiry into any aspect of music. This is a capstone for any strand of study students may pursue within the music curriculum. This course will require a sophisticated, college ready use of core standards in making a claim, analytical research, synthesis of resources, and supporting arguments. Students will select and design a course of study in conjunction with a mentoring teacher who will facilitate the production of a final thesis product.
